Olympic View Wedding, Victoria, BC | Derek & Naomi

We were so happy to see Naomi and Derek again! It had been a hot minute since their engagement shoot at Goldstream Provincial Park…we’re talking almost 1 year pre-pandemic! These two have a ton of chemistry and we had a lot of laughs together - and we were thrilled they decided to do the more intimate part of their day this year and celebrate the ceremony! They’re saving the party for next May...get ready Yorkshire puddings!

We spent an afternoon being shuttled around the greens by the amazing coordinator, Katrina! She toured us through the woods, Japanese Gardens & waterfall for the beautiful photo spots at Olympic View! We could not have asked for a lovelier day, from their family (Naomi's sister was hilarious) to the perfect weather, it was amazing to celebrate that #LOVEISNOTCANCELLED!

Congratulations Derek & Naomi - can't wait to share in the party next year!

Why Hire A Husband & Wife Wedding Photography Team https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2021/5/why-hire-a-husband-wife-wedding-photography-team Why Hire A Husband & Wife Wedding Photography Team?

It is often said that "Teamwork Makes The Dream Work!"

And it could not be more accurate when it comes to us! It's easy to see why two may be better than one, but here is exactly why we believe hiring a Husband & Wife Team will be the best decision you can make while planning your Wedding!

Husband & Wife Wedding Photography Husband & Wife Wedding Photography why hire a husband and wife team

1: Real Posing

Have you every had someone describe to you how they want something done, only to not get it remotely right? We understand. Thats why we make every effort to "SHOW"! As a husband and wife team, we are in the unique and amazing position to show our couples posing demos in real time! From hugs, holds and kisses - to dips, spins & lifts! Its also helpful for us as photographers - because we quickly find out what doesn't work and what is amazing!

The extra bonus is instead of standing around waiting for any settings and light to be adjusted, like with a single photographer, you can cuddle up together off camera while we warm the lights and get the settings dialled in on each other.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

2: Eye for Details

Not only do we offer help and direction to our couples, but we offer an all seeing eye for detail! With two of us, it means we are paying deep attention to the details on & around you! Whether your necklace is out of place, or a piece of grass is in the wrong spot - we make sure all the little things are taken care of, so you can pay attention to what's important . . .each other!

3: Dual Perspectives

When we get home from a wedding, or an engagement session, our favourite part is looking at each others' photos! It's amazing to see the full wedding story unfold as we blend our stories together!

We pride ourselves on being able to be in two places at once! What does that mean for our couples?

1) It means that those important moments have alot lower chance of being missed

2) We can capture your two angles at the same time. For instance at the ceremony we can capture your actions and reactions at a ceremony and others candid parts of the day!

3) You get an extra bonus hour of coverage IN A WAY. By having Steve capturing the guys getting ready and Courtney capturing the girls getting ready we divide and conquer. Thus giving you much better coverage than a solo photographer travelling between two rooms or often far apart locations right at the start of a day.

We love working as a team and giving our couples, both our perspectives.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

4: We Work as a Team in Every Aspect

Time is precious - and we don't want moments to be missed or passed by. One of the great advantages of our team dynamic is that we can divide our workflow to ensure our couples are getting everything covered that they want as part of their story. If you've seen us in action during the family photos at a wedding - you know what we're talking about! While I'm gathering and posing the masses (and sometimes holding pets) Steve is setting up lights and clicking the shutter! We are consistently working with each other to ensure our couples have an amazing day without a moment missed!

5: The Double Date

Our couples love the double date experience we provide! As another a couple, it makes it more fun and comfortable to chat about life, love, marriage and all the things in between (like whats on the dinner menu tonight!)! What is more fun than hanging out with a like minded couple who get you, and just want to make your day amazing!

Beach Club Elopement | Ray & Tanisha https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2021/5/beach-club-elopement-ray-tanisha Beach Club Elopement | Ray & Tanisha

Ray & Tanisha first met at a board games night through a mutual friend. By the end of the night, Ray had been volun-told that he'd be driving Tanisha home...which was in no way the direction he needed to go to get to his own place. From that night on, Tanisha made sure to invite Ray to every outing she organized, and since she had just moved to the mainland and hadn't met many people - there were a lot!

Ray had no idea that Tanisha was interested in him. None.

About a year after they met - Tanisha organized a dance party - hoping Ray would ask her to dance. When he didn't catch on - she let him know her frustrations, and finally, after a year of spending time together, Ray clued in - and he casually invited her on a date just a few days later.

13 Months later, they had picked out a ring, and on a trip to Whistler Ray popped the question.

"I can't date you anymore...will you marry me?"

From the first look on the beach front - the portraits at Little Mountain - their day was amazing! The Beach Club had a brand new space to celebrate the ceremony, a large, secluded, outdoor patio for all of us to safely celebrate #covid.

CONGRATULATIONS RAY & TANISHA!

Nanaimo Swy-A-Lana Wedding | Tracy & Ryan https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2021/3/tracy-ryan-nanaimo-elopement-at-swy-a-lana Nanaimo Swy-A-Lana Wedding |  Tracy & Ryan

Tracy is the entire reason we had snow this February 2021. Tracy wished for a snowy wedding, we talked about it, put it out there in the universe and BOOM! Snow on their wedding day! Being residents of Vancouver Island, one of the least snowy places in Canada, means we only get snow once (sometimes twice!) a year - and we were thrilled it was for Tracy & Ryans Valentines Elopement! It was so cold - the snow covered the ground AT THE WATER! For all our friends thinking its no big thing, it is. Snow never goes to the ocean!

Their snowy elopement at Swy-A-Lana wasn't the original plan - but as we're all well aware, Covid-19 has created the need to adjust - at least temporarily. Their nearest friends & family came together to celebrate! The best man, Andrew, shovelled out an area out by the bridge at the seawall for the ceremony to happen and the two said their vows amid the snow & the ocean!

It was truly a spectacular day, we had a great time with these two and can't wait to see them again soon in the near future for their BIG celebration in October!

Cuckoo Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Vancouver Island Wedding Photography https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/12/cuckoo-wedding-vendor-spotlight Cuckoo's Coombs Wedding Venue Spotlight

A Romantic Italian Trattoria on Vancouver Island

We love sharing our favourite Vancouver Island wedding vendors! We especially love sharing the hidden gems that not everyone knows about! So it goes without saying we are very excited to share this one...Cuckoo's Trattoria in Coombs, BC, and Chef Fausto. Fausto took the time to sit down with us and answer some questions to help give brides some extra information about the experience of having your wedding at Cuckoos. As wedding photographers, we see all the little details that venues offer, and Cuckoo's not only offers amazing food - but a one of a kind experience for your wedding day!

An Interview At Cuckoos with Chef Fausto

By the Julien's Steve & Courtney www.julienphotography.ca Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

We met up with chef at Cuckoos in Coombs to find out a little more about the venue, and some behind the scenes information that brides can expect from their wedding at Cuckoos Trattoria. Chef was a lot of fun to chat with, we had a few questions and here's what he had to say:

Q: Why/How did you and Cuckoos get into weddings?

Fausto: Cuckoo Italian Trattoria is the result of the “marriage” between the family values and cultural traditions of the Geekie family, Owners of Cuckoo & the Old Country Market, and the Bellicini family, my family, back in Italy…We strongly believe that creating a place where our Guests and their families can come together to celebrate life with friends and relatives, with good food and good wine in the impeccable yet simple elegance of our venue, is a recipe for success, and a joyous place to be.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: We really loved hearing about your wedding experience on the Mainland - can you share it with us again please!

Fausto: During my 36 years career, I had the fortune to work side by side some of the most mythical Chefs, and all those experiences came together when I joined the North Shore Conference Center in North Vancouver.  We hosted an average of 85 Weddings per year…Italian Weddings…450 guests and up. That experience gave me the confidence to provide high quality food & service to large groups of guests, personalizing each event, according to the wishes of each client.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: What is your favourite part about Weddings at Cuckoos?

Fausto: The intimacy and classic elegance of our venue, which is second to none! We always make the point to tell our guests that we are not a banquet facility. Cuckoo’s Heritage Dining Room is unique in to itself and it provides a stunning background for memorable events that will stay with our guests for a lifetime.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: What are a couple of your favourite features unique to Cuckoos?

Fausto: Our Food and our Staff! Beside the above mentioned beauty of our venue, our authentic food is the primary reason why Cuckoo Italian Trattoria is successful as a restaurant. We also have been very fortunate to attract and retain a great group of staff that, sincerely, share our passion for serving our guests and becoming part of their celebrations. Being a private property, away from the traffic and noise, also provides our guests with an oasis of tranquility and a sense of “being transported to a Country Home in Tuscany”

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: What question do brides ask you the most?

Fausto: “How much is it going to cost me?”….no, wait…that’s usually the Groom’s question…! Joking aside, most couples ask questions about the whole process, however in the end they comment on how easy we make the whole process for them…we keep an open line of communication and exchange emails with our couples, we like to meet in person whenever it is possible and we answer all their questions… I imagine it is a big decision, but most brides have a pretty good idea of how they envision their wedding to be. We make ourselves fully available to assist them in making their dream come true…

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: What do you do different that some other venues on Vancouver Island?

Fausto: I truly believe that we wear our heart on our sleeve and our sincere passion for serving our guests comes through at the first meeting… Every bride has a different vision, every couple has a different story, every family is different and personalizing each event is key. We pride ourselves in tailoring every decision regarding each wedding, according to the wishes of the couple, according to their taste and their budget. Simple elegance is a trademark of our venue and simplicity is appreciated throughout the process of organizing a memorable Wedding!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Q: Is there anything you would like to promote or some additional information?

Fausto: This is the most “advertising” we have done in the past several years, regarding Cuckoo Italian Trattoria. Word of mouth has developed our business in to what you see here today…our guests have always given us sincere and fair reviews and have helped us be better each time.  The addition of the Fountain Garden patio and the Country Cottage Room, are the direct result of the success we have had in the past several years. Cuckoo Italian Trattoria is about serving our guests with freshness and passion!  Combining West Coast ingredients with traditional Italian recipes. Come on over…your table is ready!

Here's what our couples have to say about us...

My husband and booked the Juliens for our wedding at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort and could not have been happier! Our experience right from the initial communication to the final delivery of our image gallery exceeded our expectations. The photos turned out incredible and we now have so many stunning images to look at. The best part is that Courtney and Steve were fun to hang out with and made us feel comfortable the entire time. Our guests are still raving about how good our photographers were (and we are too)! I can't recommend these two enough and have no doubt that we will be choosing them the next time we need a photographer.

Often one of the most important things a couple is looking for when it comes to choosing a place for their day is accommodations! TNM boasts Oceanview suites, woodland cabins and a world class spa! Its amazing to know you and your guests can not only get ready for the big day on site - but that they can easily head back to their rooms at the end of it!

The Reception Rooms

Book a tour of TNM to get a great feel for the property, and have a look at the various options for your dinner & reception! They have a few gorgeous ballrooms, as well as a garden patio - and we know there will be a perfect fit for your celebration!

Rain Plan Options

TNM has a backup plan! When touring the property, have a look at their covered garden patio! If its raining on the wedding day, they set up both the Gazebo & Garden patio, and let the bride & groom decide 2 hours prior to their ceremony or even at the last minute when things/rain go sideways! Weather is something that is out of everyones control, but being prepared with a backup plan isn't and takes the stress out of the big day! TNM's goal is to provide their couples with alternatives if they are needed!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Our Experience with the TNM Rain Plan!

We remember Olson and Ethel's Wedding day! They really wanted to get married at the gazebo but it was pouring rain!  Tigh na Mara's staff relocated the ceremony chairs under the gazebo for an intimate ceremony; however 15 minutes before the ceremony was about to start - the rain started coming in sideways, with wind! Not ideal for families, friends and the couple. Fast forward, The staff jumped and moved the ceremony to the sheltered garden patio and the ceremony was saved! This was a great example of the staff trying to help make the couples experience everything they dreamed of, and it turned out beautifully! We even went out after to take some photos at the gazebo in the rain so they could get their iconic Tigh-Na-Mara Gazebo Wedding photo. Needless to say - we love that TNM has such amazing options if it does pour!

The Tigh-Na-Mara Experience

Tigh-Na-Mara offers services of co-ordination on the day, they take care of preparing the ceremony site, and help the day move along. While they don't coordinate and plan your day with your other vendors - you can rest assured all the Tigh-Na-Mara aspects are taken care of. Besides the staff with years of experience, the food is delicious...their Executive Chef & his team can customize menus for your day, and Chef loves preparing amazing dishes for weddings! They offer an experience that will not only impress your friends and family, but will be remembered forever! At Tigh-Na-Mara, you're going to get the destination wedding experience without having to travel too far.

Could this October have been anymore gorgeous? Holy moly! We love FALL!! The colours are warm, the light is a little lower in the sky - which helps to create some magical photos, and it us also the month that Kevin & Karissa got married!!

We had such an epic time with Kevin & Karissa, and spent a great deal of it laughing and loving capturing their day on camera. At their first look - we saw the brightest, and one of the most beautiful smiles from Karissa when she tapped Kevin on the shoulder. Kevin was also genuinely excited to see her for the first time in her gown! We're such big fans of the first look - especially in cooler Fall & Winter months! It allows for everyone to settle into the warmth of the reception room right after the ceremony, enjoy some toasty beverages, and the glow of a fireplace!

These two really let us do our thing and trusted us to be creative and the results are so stunning some of our favourite exposures of the year...especially their stunning evening "night" images!! We were able to create those just as the sun was setting - all it took was 5 FLASHES to light up various parts of the scene mixed in with the gorgeous autumn light and VOILA! Easily our favourite evening photos of the year!

Congratulations Kevin & Karissa! May you enjoy many long years through the tempest of love and sea-faring on the calm seas of life" (Inside Joke),, love and laughs!

Leanne & Bruce's day took on a slightly different look than they had anticipated...originally planned for the sunny shores of Cabo, instead they celebrated on the cooler, wild shores of the West Coast! Their day was relaxed and stress free, with an amazingly supportive bridal party & fantastic family guest list.

So often the rain & cold weather gets a bad rap - but honestly, it makes for some of the most dramatic photos! Sure...we were all a tad chilly (including the men in kilts!) - but it was worth it! The warmth of the garden patio at Tigh-Na-Mara heated everyone up! We know that the breeze of the West Coast is a far cry from that of Cabo - but we were so honoured that Bruce & Leanne celebrated their intimate and stunning wedding with us here on Vancouver Island!

Rathtrevor Beach Wedding | Nathan & Jillian https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/10/rathtrevor-beach-wedding-nathan-jillian Rathtrevor Beach Wedding | Nathan & Jillian

What a day for Nathan & Jillian! These two were married on the smokiest day of 2020! It made for some incredibly unique images - and light!

For the first time - we started at the wrong ceremony site...yes. You read that correctly. Hilariously enough, we followed Nathan to the spot, there were chairs, a sign, a few guests and the officiant all there awaiting the bridal party...as time went on a the ceremony seemed to be running a little late and then someone came running across the parking lot - we were at the wrong spot at Rathtrevor! Cue laughs, and a small bit of panic. Honestly, the actual location was even better! And it was also clearly marked (we're laughing so hard reliving this). Instead of the forest (also a great spot), there was a stunning beach spot mostly set up (groomsmen were running with the chairs) with views that spanned the smokey strait, with a thick blanket of smoke softening the backdrop as they held hands on the beach in front of us...and exchanged one gorgeous diamond ring and a stunning, green RING POP!

From touches of Tartan to Drambuie - their day was filled with some beautiful family traditions, and laughs and it was spectacular to share in! Their family and friends gave great speeches, ending with raising a dram in celebration the traditional Scottish way, with Drambuie. We enjoyed a delicious dinner from Farm to Fire (Wood Fired Pizza), and capped off the evening with first dances, cake cutting and some amazing people.

Congrats Nathan & Jillian, and thank you for inviting us to share in your spectacular day!

Merridale Wedding | Sara & Matt https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/9/merridale-wedding-sara-matt Merridale Wedding | Sara & Matt

There was so much rich history filling the air for Sara & Matt's day...it was unreal! These two have known each other since they were six years old, Sara's dad and Matt's mom were both teachers at the same high schools, (and they were both teachers of mine (Courtney's)), Sara & I performed in musicals together, competed in talent shows and played sports together! With all the shared history - their wedding was truly one for the books and memorable to be a part of!

From the old Chevy and orchard, to the Distillery at night - these to had picture perfect backdrops for their day. The vibe was calm and exciting all at the same time (save for when Matts best man got in the wrong end of a fight with an apple tree branch...leaving him with a branch shaped gash in his head - but don't worry, we photoshopped it out for you buddy!). During the reception, Sara's sister, Caitlyn, was up on the TV at the back taking her sisters day in through Zoom, and later leading everyone in a great game of Music Trivia.

This season of weddings has been utterly interesting to say the least - and yet its been truly amazing to see how everyone comes together, and celebrates all the same, but adjusts things and adds a few more boundaries in place! We could not be any more blessed to still have the joy of capturing these amazing moments at a time such as this!

We had the honour of shooting both photos & video for their amazing day - and are beyond excited to share both with you! So stay tuned for their amazing highlight video (but in the mean time - we've put their teaser trailer for you below)!

Government House Engagement | Cher & Jeremy https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/7/government-house-engagement-cher-jeremy Government House Engagement | Cher & Jeremy

We first met Cher at a Justin Timberlake concert almost 6 years ago now (we think!) and clicked right away! We love her energy, charisma and excitement! Needless to say - when she told us she was engaged...we were instantly over the moon to share the day with her and Jeremy, ANNNNND capture their engagement session for them at one of Victoria's most stunning locations - Government House!

Living in Nanaimo is the perfect location for us - it makes for a great central hub to travel all around the island for our couples. We always suggest couples choose somewhere that is meaningful or resonates with them for their sessions! Think of a perfect date what do you want to do - and it will make for an amazing engagement session! For Cher & Jeremy - that meant gardens, ponds and old architecture, something with a castle like feel!

We had a awesome time wandering the grounds at Government house! These two are a perfect fit for her and we are just so genuinely happy for them both! Cher & Jeremy - HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on your engagement, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you!

Lantzville Elopement {Michelle & Brian} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/7/lantzville-elopement-michelle-brian Intimate Lantzville Wedding {Michelle & Brian}

We first chatted with Brian & Michelle about a month prior to their wedding date. Like many couples this year, they had to change things up, forgo the bigger, initial celebration and plan instead for something more intimate! And it was stunning! Their wedding was hosted at Brian's parents house in lower Lantzville, right on the beach with their family and a few close friends! Their vision was family centred (they have 3 ADORABLE boys!) relaxed, cozy and perfect for the west coast. There were bubbles, smoke grenades, cheers, amazing food, a sprinkle of rain - but most importantly there were smiles, laughter and an amazing couple was celebrated!

While this season of life has been so strange, it has also been an incredible reminder about what really matters, and what is at the centre of each of the weddings we photograph! Being with the people you love and sharing your hearts with them - that is what matters, and we were honoured to be part of Brian & Michelle's beautiful day!

Nanaimo Elopement & Intimate Wedding {Alexander & Madison} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/7/nanaimo-elopement-intimate-wedding-al-madison Nanaimo Elopement & Intimate Wedding {Alexander & Madison}

When life throws you lemons - make lemonade! That is part of the Julien Photography philosophy, Al & Madison did just that and had themselves an amazing intimate wedding with a few of the nearest and dearest!

Their original wedding plans involved Noisy Acres, with a lot more guests, unfortunately with all thats going on in the world, it just couldn't happen. Even though it didn't go exactly as they had planned - it went perfectly! Madison had thought about a backyard wedding during the planning process - landscaping their yard, having a catered event at home and keeping it intimate! When the opportunity arose to still host a smaller, more intimate wedding - they jumped at the chance to transform their backyard and host their celebration there!

There were so many awesome parts to the day - but none so heart clenching as Alexanders vow's to Madison, they were tear inducing, especially this part...

"Madison - you said growing up that everyone always chose you last. I chose you first"

I mean - there was not a dry eye at the ceremony, including ours! It was beautiful! After the ceremony, A&M were surprised to see the whole neighbourhood come together in their social bubbles to congratulate them, cheering and holding signs for them! It was an unreal sight and reminded us of the joy weddings bring to everyone and having everyone celebrate in that love together!

June 20 has a special place in our hearts - not only is it Al & Madisons wedding date, its also ours! It was fantastic to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary, we were treated to an amazing dinner, at a private table in the backyard - served by the amazing Spice of Life Catering.

This was our first wedding post Covid quarantine, and we were overwhelmed by the amount of joy and love surrounding these two! It was spectacular to share in their celebration!

Three Reasons To Consider Eloping on Vancouver Island https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/6/Eloping-on-Vancouver-Island Three Reasons to Consider Eloping

or

Having an Intimate Wedding

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Whether it is due to size restrictions, timing or other reasons, eloping on Vancouver Island is an amazing wedding experience! Elopements are a unique, intimate and romantic way to celebrate your love! From taking a helicopter or chairlift to the top of a mountain, to a sandy beach on the edge of the pacific or a romantic forest wonderland - there is no end to the amazing elopement possibilities on Vancouver Island!

As a husband and wife ourselves, we have had the amazing opportunity to be a part of several elopements, we have had the honour of being the two witnesses as well as the photographers! Every time we sign a marriage certificate for a couple, we realize just how much we love being part of such a beautiful moment in a couples life!

These are some of our favourite reasons why elopements can be truly amazing...

Incredible Locations

The possibilities are endless if its just you, your love a JP and photographer! You can explore the ocean tides, the forest glades, hike into your favourite spot or take a helicopter to a glacier! If you've got a few guests, and a couple bridal party members - there are some beautifully intimate venues perfect just for you! Some of our favourite places for elopements & intimate weddings are Mt. Washington, Villa Eyrie, Tigh-Na-Mara, The Crow & Gate Pub, Cuckoos Trattoria just to name a few!

Intimate

If you've dreamt of a quiet wedding with some of your closest family & friends, or just the two of you - elopements are perfection! Often couples choose eloping because they're looking for a completely intimate wedding celebration and a day focused just the two of them. With a smaller celebration, the only pressures you have are which spot on the big beach to choose, and barefoot or shoes! It is a day fully authentic to you!

So - if you're not into the idea of a traditional wedding with all the bells and whistles, this may be the perfect option for you! Elopements and intimate weddings give you the freedom to decide exactly how you celebrate your love in a way that best works for you.

Investment

Let be honest - a bigger wedding comes with a larger cost. Venue, decor, food, florals, drinks and more. For couples who elope - it may not be because they didn't want a big wedding, it may just be that they want to invest it differently into their celebration. Eloping allows you to really focus on the experience, in your needs rather than the needs of many.

Rather than investing in ballrooms and lights - why not spend your money on something truly spectacular, like a helicopter experience to a glacier, a spectacular celebrant to provide a custom ceremony, or even maybe hire a couple of the best Photographers / Videographers on the Island!!

If you value experiences, adventures and truly unforgettable memories - then eloping may be the perfect fit for you.

If you want an amazing elopement experience, we would love to chat...

Adding Videography with Julien Photography https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/6/adding-videography-with-julien-photography Adding Videography with Julien Photography

Wedding days move at an incredibly quick pace! No sooner have you said your "I Dos" at the alter, and suddenly you're spinning on the dance floor as the new Mr. & Mrs! Videography is one of our absolute favourite things to add to our wedding collections. We love the music, vows, laugher, tears and the love - there is not much about wedding videos that we don't love, and that doesn't make us tear up! You can capture so much emotion, and so much personality! Photos will adorn your walls, and your film will hold each smile, emotion and tear for you to rewatch!

It can be easy to overlook adding video to your wedding day - there are so many details that you might get wrapped up in when planning, but here are a few reasons we think it is worth adding video into your day and your wedding budget!

1. Your First Looks & Vows...

For so many of our couples, the moment they see their partner for the first time coming down the aisle. Its an emotionally driven moment, with tears and breaths taken away - the moment is so fleeting and it brings up so much excitement to re-watch it! A lot of the time, our couples write special, custom vows to each other!  What better way to remember all the hard work you put in!

2. Storytelling.

Wedding video tells an epic story. Drone shots capture the scenery below, slides & pans document the details you spent hours planning and preparing for the day, and then there are all the moments between you and your partner, family members, bridal party and more! The tears rolling down your finances cheeks as you walk down the aisle, your hands shaking as you place your wedding bands on each others finger - video is the ultimate storyteller, and you can rewatch it over and over again!

3. Capture Life at its Most Joyful

One of our favourite things about wedding video is the power that it has to capture life! Some of the guests at your wedding have come from far & away, or you don't have the opportunity to see them on a regular basis, there may be some adorable little ones at your wedding, or just some incredibly memorable moments! Wedding video is the perfect way to keep a more than a memory of the day, and all the love that was shared on it!

We want you to all look your best! So we recommend creating a "look" for your session! This means that you will want to wear clothing with a colour story! Here are some ideas that work great:

- Brighter Tones: If you’re on the beach, you might enjoy going for brighter tones, and complimenting those with neutrals! This will help you pop from the scene!

- Start with the bride to be's outfit - and craft your look around her!

- Compliment, DON'T MATCH!: You want colours that generally complement each other: for instance, soft colours (light blue, grey, blush) or warm colours (brown, orange, burgundy), If you want colourful images, then you should choose a more vivid colour scheme for your outfits!

- Solids Work Best: While pattern does look great, if you’re looking for a fail-proof outfit combination, go with solids. To keep things from looking boring, include textures (think chunky knits, tulle, lace, etc). Avoid tiny prints, especially small plaid and small stripes.

Please don't overlook this detail! Put your feet in something that adds to your look! We love high heels, or heeled boots with a cute dress! If you have a fabulous pair of shoes that you've been meaning to wear...this is the PERFECT time! If you've got matching his/hers shoes (like Steve & I do!), you could go that route too! Shoes can make or break your look - so make sure they're top priority! That means no ratty or muddy sneakers!

If we're on a sandy beach - maybe you want to go barefoot, in which case, bring a towel with you to dry your feet off.

- This is the perfect opportunity to have a run-through with your hair & makeup artist. It's a great way to get to know the artists you've booked for the wedding day and hold a mini practice session! We know some fabulous artists - so If you need recommendations, just let us know and we'll hook you up!

- Have your hair blown out or styled for the session. Give some thought to where we're shooting the session, and style your hair accordingly! If we're at a windy beach, you may want your hair pulled back to avoid it getting in your eyes - just make sure you take care of you!

- If you’re planning on doing your own makeup, pay special attention to your eyes! Your eyes will be a focal point for many of your images, so spend extra time making them look beautiful, and definitely consider wearing false lashes! Wear a little more makeup than usual, as this will help you really pop in frame! Also, natural colour tones (browns, tans, pinks) tend to look flattering on most skin tones.

- Transition Glasses: Please be mindful that with sun, often transitions will make the move to dark, and we love to see your eyes in the photos! If you have alternate glasses, or can wear contacts for the photos, we would love to see them!

This session is all about you - so why not bring something you love! A prop (like light sabres, an insta log for a beach fire, books, a pet or a classic car!) really makes your session unique for you! We've seen canoes, dogs, and yes - light sabres! We've "floated" books! It makes the session more fun and even more memorable and we can get incredible creative with what we're photographing!

You may have heard us mention it when we were chatting - its so important to choose a location that resonates with you both! We don't want to put you in a place that makes no sense for you. We can help you choose the perfect location - just give us a few details of what you love! The beach, the forest, the place where you got engaged or even a place where you enjoy a hobby together!

We know this may be your first time in front of the camera, we've got you covered! During your session we're there telling you how fabulous you're looking, how great you're doing and guiding you throughout the experience! We'll let you know where your hands need to be, where to look, and by the time your wedding day arrives - you will be utterly flawless & confident in front of the camera!

Costa Rica, Playas Hermosa Engagement Session {Taryn & Jeremy} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/4/costa-rica-playas-hermosa-honeymoon-session-taryn-jeremy Costa Rica, Playas Hermosa Engagement Session {Taryn & Jeremy}

Taryn & Jeremy's engagement session had all the elements to make a phenomenal - big ocean waves,  sunset on the beach, a little bit of jungle, and wild kittens in the bushes. And I'll just say it - because I think we can all agree, my sister is absolutely stunning. She wore that wine colour, crepe dress like a supermodel and it was the perfect look for their beach photoshoot! Jeremy complimented her look perfectly!
I always find it so interesting when I photograph my family because I start to see things that I had never seen before when I've looked at them - and love it. Taryn & our mom are mirror images of one another, and even thought people had said it so many times, it wasn't until I was staring down the lens and at their photos in the editing room, that I realized just how much...now I'm wondering who I even look like! I love photographing my family!

We always suggest choosing a place that resonates with you for your session, it helps you feel comfortable, free and really present during the session! Costa Rica is Taryn & Jeremy's favourite place on the planet - from the jungle and animals to the sand and surf, everything about this place makes it feel like a warmer version of home for them. Relaxed yet sexy was what they had in mind for their shoot...and I feel like we delivered! I was hard to stop shooting to be honest...but when you've got it all - its just time to reflect!

These were a few favourites from their session...

Destination Wedding : Cancun, Mexico {Monica & Shawn} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/3/destination-wedding-cancun-mexico-monica-shawn Destination Wedding : Cancun, Mexico {Monica & Shawn}

We've been trying to decide what we loved best about Shawnica's celebration...was it that they went barefoot in the sand to get married? Spent the days leading up to the wedding hanging out with their nearest and dearest...of which we are now included!! That they made custom mugs for everyone, hung out at karaoke and partied like it was 1999? We could go on...but the truth is we just loved everything about their wedding celebration! It was - in one word: SPECTACULAR!! As we look over the video footage, the photos, the peoples' expressions the one thing that stands out, is the JOY that everyone shared for these two amazing people - and as always it was such an honour and blessing to share in it!

Its not often we can convince a bride AND groom to run through the ocean with wild abandon - but as luck would have it...Shawnica was game to splash and play in true Cancun fashion! Her dress, his suit, Steves pants and my dress...all chalked with fine white sand, salt and completely soaked, but it was totally worth it for some amazing photos, video and memories! These two love with a carefree joie de vivre (Monica...I hope you like that one!) that most people dream of - and it spread right into our work! We can hardly wait to get the final photos & video delivered, but in the mean time, ENJOY the preview!

Vancouver Island Wedding Awards 2020 https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/3/vancouver-island-wedding-awards-2020 Vancouver Island Wedding Awards 2020

This years VIWIA were the best yet! Not only because we (and by we I mean Courtney!!) took home an incredible 2 awards -but also because I was reminded just how much fun everyone in the wedding industry on Vancouver Island is to spend time with! The night began pretty differently than I (Steve) thought it would when fellow amazing photog Kelsey Goodwin invited co host Jon-Mark Wiltshire up to the stage in DRAG! Not only did JM dazzle - but he invited a few select guys in the wedding industry to join him on stage... to embrace their inner beauty. You can see me with a gorgeous wig below!

After that craziness the awards were underway! One the things we love most about the VIWIA's is the blind judging! The judges have no idea who's images they're looking at, and there is no bias! There are 8 awards given out in the photography category, so we spend a good amount of time (because it is HARD choosing!) our top images from the past season for paid submission. Here are the photos why we chose to submit this year, along with which categories we submitted to! Lets start with the 2 Categories we brought home awards in...

Best Wedding Detail Photo

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We love the Detail category - and have won this award 3 out of the 7 years of the Vancouver Island Wedding Awards! Most years a ring photo has won and it drives Courtney crazy - not because she doesn't love rings - but because there are so many other stunning details that make up a brides or a grooms look! Courtney's image of Dana's dress hanging on the reception barn at Birds Eye Cove Farm is officially the FIRST TIME something other than a spectacular ring shot has won the award for Best Wedding Detail! We love this photo because of the framing, the symmetry, the use of reflection (thanks to an iPhone!), the blue sky with the warm wood tones and of course the stunning gown! I'm pretty sure Courtney went supersonic when I told her she had won!

Best Groom Portrait

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

Definitely one of our all time favourite Groom Portraits! We call this one Mountain Man. Jenn (Mikes wife) called this one SEXY MAN...LOL! We're all about creating images that will go in frames on nightstands and giant canvas prints on walls!! We had ventured all over the place in Strathcona Park - and Courtney stopped when she saw the way the light was settling behind Mike! We shoot in all types of light - but love that perfect evening light (that we don't often get on a wedding day)! Court is always laying in grass, sand, rocks and this time it was worth the mountain chill! For Courtney - there is nothing better than shooting up towards a groom to give the shot a powerful, Citizen Kane feel! Combine that with dramatic, hard light - its the perfect recipe for a successful Men's Portrait! I was pretty sure Courtney went supersonic when I told her about her win in the Detail category...but she lost it when I called to tell her about this one! First she congratulated ME on the win...and then it hit her!

Best Wedding Couple Submission #1

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We loved so many things about this image! First - the history! These are the woods that Lisa spent her summers playing barefoot in (yes - she was barefoot on her wedding day too!). Her family cabin is just up over the hill, and the entire area was full of amazing memories for her! Courtney loved the way the stream captured their reflection, the towering trees above and the technical challenge of lighting this image! For Court...it just had that magical look and feel to it which made it an easy submission choice!

Best Wedding Couple Submission #2

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

I (Steve) loved the mirror like symmetry in this image! Again - the reflection (what can we say! We LOVE reflection!), the connection between Ben and Christina and this being one of their favourite beaches! Judges also typically like looking for triangles in photos and you can see a few here in the arms legs and reflection!

Best Wedding Couple #3

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We couldn't resist submitting a third image to this category! Every time we look at this image, we think of a beautiful pastoral painting. Its relaxing, intimate, bold & colourful all at the same time! We loved the mixture of flash complimented by the soft sunlight hitting their hair, the leading lines of the rustic old farm fence & gravel road, and the lush greens of late summer!

Best Wedding Day Candid

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

While kids, babies and grandparents often win this category - we are suckers for a tear inducing, emotional, first look. The above image is Darrin seeing Kayley for the FIRST TIME as she got to the top of the aisle in the church. I mean...we were crying. This is one of our all time favourite moments on a wedding day. Whether we see it at a first look ahead of the ceremony or at the ceremony - it is always breathtaking to see a reaction like Darrin's!

Wedding -Best Bridal Party Portrait

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We just loved the back lit old barn at Bird's Eye Cove! There was something so traditional about the set up, and the down to earth element of the rustic barn - we just loved this image.

Best Bride Alone Portrait (Wedding Day)

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We loved Dana's award winning Dress! It flowed beautifully and combined with her cathedral veil - it made for some amazing images! This was one of our favourite bridals because the motion, framing of the bride at the dip in the mountains and the clouds creating some beautiful drama!

Best Engagement Photo

Julien Photography Vancouver Island Wedding AwardsJulien Photography VIWIA

We know judges love a photo that tells a story - so we chose this one as we loved the location, the warm fire and cool sky! The location of this image is the same place where I proposed to Courtney some 12 years ago as well - so it gave us all the feels!

While we not every photo won we were honoured to walk out with two stunning diamond awards for Wedding Detail and Groom portrait! It was fun trying to choose what to submit and trying to figure out what judges would connect with. We are excited for next year and will keep fighting for best overall photographer on Vancouver Island.

THE AFTER PARTY

After the awards show, there was a fantastic celebration reception! Four Frames Photo Booth had a couple of booths set up to get some fun gifs and photos! There was live music, drinks, food and a lot of great mingling with some of my favourite industry peeps! It was the perfect way to cap off such an awesome, successful night! We can't wait for next year!

6 Tips if it Rains on Your Wedding Day! https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/3/Vancouver-Island-rainy-wedding-photography Rainy Day on Wedding Tips

While planning your wedding, you may have had the unwanted thought..."What if it rains on my wedding day?"...And then maybe panicked? Don't worry! You are not alone, and It's not just something we here on Vancouver Island worry about! The possibility that it might sprinkle, drizzle or even pour on your wedding day is there - and you can't control the weather! You might be tempted to worry, but we're here to let you know - you shouldn't! First, we're going to tell you that rain can make for some pretty stunning images, you just might need some umbrellas and some patience...After photographing dozens of rainy weddings our first tip can be hard, to do but it is the most important!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

1. If You've Got Lemons Make lemonade. . . (A.K.A Having a Positive Attitude)!

We know the pressure, expectations and all the last minute adjustments you may have to make on the day if it rains, but if you are prepared, so are most venues and professional photographers with a rain plan! Surrounding yourself with people that can make lemons into lemonade is huge!

If you remain positive in any situation, there is a good chance that it will be a positive experience! You cannot change the weather - no matter how hard you try! We know it might not have been what you planned or hoped for, but the best way to make it the amazing day you dreamt of is to celebrate the weather!

So our advice if it's raining: DON'T FREAK OUT. Stay calm - don't watch your weather app for weeks leading up to the wedding, because it will change, it will yo-yo and you will go up and down with it. Again - have patience, prepare your bridal party that photos will still be happening, prepare yourself that photos will still be happening, and that we'll all be out in the rain making magic, together.

Here are a few Positive things to keep in mind if the weather is less than stellar...

Umbrellas: Thats right...the umbrella that has been collecting dust in the corner gets some use! We love umbrellas, they frame your faces and makes your photos instantly POP! They're a great photo accessory! You can use them for your entire bridal party, or you can cuddle up under them, just the two of you to keep warm! We highly recommend getting some of the clear umbrellas for your photos!

Closeness: The rain brings you both closer taking together hold each other keep warm hid under something it is an awesome photo opportunity. Also Having your guests all under one roof/tent means everyone stays close together chatting, mingling and sharing a memorable time!

Own It: Some of the most dramatic, awe inspiring, beautiful images happen when you throw caution to the rain and jump out in it - with or without the umbrella!

Memorable: Rainy weddings are a little more unique than your typical sunny wedding, and you will always have an exciting story to tell about your wedding day!

Rain Adds Drama to Photos: We love the way the background pops with rain drops glowing behind you! Just find a professional photographer that can really bring out those rain drops with proper lighting!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

2. Waterproof/Sealed Make & Up-do's...

Aside from the fact you might cry a little, or a lot on your big day, water proof/air brush sealed make up is a fabulous thing! Chat with your make-up artist about how to create a beautiful, streak free, rain proof look! We know Jessica Churcher Makeup Artistry even has a personal all day coverage package to keep your look flawless all day!

Down do's don't love moisture, rain or humidity. We know you may have imagined luxurious curls falling across your shoulders...but we can promise you that 10 minutes into the rains plan for the day, you may not be very happy with the look of soggy hair in your photos. Who would be happy with that? We highly recommend coming up with a back up plan for your hair, and chatting about it with your hair stylist at your hair consultation, it never hurts to have a down & up do that you love, that way you will end up happy with your hair regardless! And always make sure to take care of your gorgeous bridesmaids to! Of course your hair can me more fabulous...but everyone deserves great hair for photos!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

4. Backup Photo Location

Where should you go for the hour or two for your epic wedding photos? Maybe you had planned having your  photos at the beach, but suddenly the idea of being on the beach in a rain storm is the last place you want to be, especially if it is going sideways! Of course you can choose to brave the storm - however if you want to be a little less soaked, let's plan on some buildings and architecture, with overhangs! Perhaps in the city, downtown, parkades, a farm house, dense forest, winery! Give your venue or a few other places a call to see if they can accommodate taking photos inside them! Churches have sometimes have some great naves, hotels have hidden gems but may require permission to shoot in the lobbies (so give them a call), take a date day around town to check in with some of your favourite hangouts to see if they would be okay with you taking some wedding photos in there!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

5. BACKUP:

Ceremony/Reception Location, Equipment & TENTS!

This is so important! We are prepared to shoot anything in the rain and bring backup equipment, as even our weather sealed cameras may need a break with our storms! We are prepared with backups, are you? Is your venue? Check with your providers and see if they have a rain plan and how much notice they need! If you are hosting a private wedding, even rental places have fabulous tents that you can set up to shelter yourselves & guests from the rain! Here are our 5 favourite central Vancouver Island wedding venues and how they handle rainy weddings:

a) Tigh-Na-Mara Has the Garden Patio that can be transformed into a stunning ceremony site!

b) Nanaimo Golf Club Saved the day by bringing in the ceremony inside the clubhouse! The reception room has great lighting and huge big bay windows that help to create a beautiful ceremony!

c) Mount Washington: Conditions change on the mountain fast! We have seen rain, snow, fog and sun, while all our brides have powered through the weather with outdoor ceremonies, Raven Lodge is ready for your day to move in! The best part? You still get that stunning view of Forbidden Plateau!

d) Cuckoos: For smaller wedding under 100, Chef Fausto and his team can transform the dining room or the upstairs ceremony site for your day! Cuckoo's also has some amazing indoor spots and overhangs for your photos, and its easy to sneak in to warm up!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

6. Jacket, Shoes & Dry Clothes

While we're out dancing in the rain, we want you to stay warm and keep your feet dry! While we're working at getting things set up, you can stay cozy in your coats, and dry shoes! Because we don't always see your shoes in an image, you can wear those waterproof Hunter boots with warm socks under your gown! If we need you back in the heels, we always carry them with us! Your groom might want to bring a dry version of his shirt and socks too, just in case. We always carry a dry set of clothes & footwear for ourselves - and we can't tell you enough how nice it is to put on dry everything at your reception!

We do everything we can to make sure you stay dry and have a great time on your big day, but sometimes we just have to go out in the rain and make the best of it! Hopefully these tips will help you prepare for the possibility of rain on your big day, and feel more comfortable with it!

Some of Rainy (and Snowy) Photos...

Richie & Kims snowy wedding day was in February - and it was phenomenal! Kim had gorgeous faux fur stoles for her bridesmaids, and one for herself to help stay cozy on the day!
Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Tanis & Nicks day was stormy like you wouldn't believe...we were soaked - but saw this rainbow and had to make one more image happen...  Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Olson & Ethel's ceremony was supposed to take place here at the Gazebo - but instead was moved into the Garden Patio. They loved the Gazebo, so we planned to take a few photos following the ceremony.  Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Rain is the perfect to snuggle under a veil... Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Bridal Party {Tips for Choosing Yours} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/2/choosing-your-bridal-party Bridal Party {Tips for Choosing Yours}

There are so many decisions to be made when it comes to your wedding, and we believe choosing your wedding party, the team that will stand beside and behind you on your wedding day, is of the utmost importance!

We've seen wedding parties made up of 4, 7 & even 18 people...yep. 18 Has been our largest party yet! Sure, a big bridal party is loads of fun (sometimes), BUT the key to a healthy party is that they're all helpful in their duties, be it on the wedding day or leading up to the day. We get asked every so often how we chose our bridal party, what we would have done differently, what makes a good bridesmaid or groomsman...etc. etc. etc. So, we thought it would be a great idea to share a few tips for choosing a happy, helpful and fabulous bridal party!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

1. Symmetry is a bit of a MYTH...

Allow us to expand on that surprising title. We know. You're currently feeling shocked...but your bridal party doesn't have to be even on both sides! So what your husband to be has 3 groomsmen, and you have your 5 best friends since childhood! It photographs amazingly, and one lucky groomsmen will have 2 ladies by his side! Don't choose to match your numbers, choose to match your needs and who will be helpful during the wedding process. If that means your party is symmetric, GREAT, if not - no worries! Your bridal party is there to help, spending time trying to ensure symmetry can sometimes result in less that happy circumstances & frustration. Don't worry about trying to fill a dress...or even a suit for that matter!

FUN WEDDING FACT: Did you know that one of the traditions of a bridal party stems from a superstition? TRUE STORY! A bridal party was meant to function as a decoy for the bride & groom, and ward off evil spirits!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

2. Bigger isn't Always Better.

Like we said, we've seen wedding parties as big as 18...you may be thinking "Holy Moly...that is a lot of people!". That would be a true statement. Sometimes its a fun statement too! But every so often, it seems to grow a tad bit wild...and very quickly. In the modern tradition, your bridal party is meant to support you in stressful times, be there if and when you have a bride or groom-zilla moment (which is completely fine!), plan your bachelorette or stag, shower and take on tasks that you are unable to do alone. While bigger can be loads of fun, if you need help with planning and everyone isn't contributing, it can sometimes become frustrating, so make sure that your party is along for support, not just the ride! There are so many amazing ways to include friends in your day (if you can't fit them all into your bridal party!), you can ask your friends to be ushers, help you with planning details & party favours etc.

FUN WEDDING FACT: The tradition of a White Wedding Gown was made popular in 1840 by Queen Victoria! After she donned a gorgeous white gown with beautiful lace to her marriage of Albert, it became popular to go with white!

3. What Makes a Great Bridal Party?

Knowing you can trust your party, that you can lean on them when you need to and that they'll lift you up when you need it most! That doesn't mean you've known them since you were in the womb, and it doesn't mean you just met them yesterday. It just means they know what you need before you ask, or they're ready to rock and roll when you need it :D Lastly, that they are able to set aside their needs and put yours ahead of theirs is extremely important!

FUN WEDDING FACT: Why do we toss bouquets at weddings? Aside from the entertainment value? Today, the lucky lady to catch the bouquet is said to be married next! In old English tradition, women would try to tear off little bits of the brides dress or flower's for good luck! We all know no one wants their dress or flowers torn, so as a way to escape the ladies, the bride would throw the bouquet and run away!

Destination Wedding : Costa Rica {Taryn & Jeremy} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/2/destination-wedding-costa-rica-taryn-jeremy Destination Wedding : Costa Rica {Taryn & Jeremy}

We just got back from Costa Rica where we had the absolute honour of photographing my sisters wedding…my BABY sisters wedding! To say we had an incredible time is an understatement. We spent a week hanging out as a HUGE family, all five of us kids, our spouses, parents, Taryn & Jeremy’s best friends, and his parents & sister  - it was the BEST! We went on "Tropical Showers" (Taremy's version of Stags & Stagettes) a volcano tour, hidden beach tour (where our Dad, Dave, stepped on a sea urchin…and ended up in what I dubbed “Urchin-t Care 😂) on a sailboat with a freshly prepared dinner on the beach, played games on the patio of Villla Bueno Onda, had a BLAST celebrating Taryn and Jeremy, and FINALLY getting a bride and groom to JUMP IN A POOL at the end of the night! Of all the kids - she is the first to have a destination wedding - and while we had to leave our gorgeous little girl (Kitt) at home, it was definitely worth the trip!

Taryn read me her vows a few weeks before the wedding…and I was in tears, and then I cried again when I tried to tell Steve how amazing they were. Then I heard Jeremy’s at the ceremony…and tried not to cry. After all…I was trying to take the photos. These two…phew. LOVE! They had everyone in tears - INCLUDING the officiant! As her older sister, there is a certain amount of protectiveness I feel and yet I know she will make her own choices. I know I’m not alone (there are a few other kids!). But with Taryn, in her words “I’ll decide”. And after seeing, hearing and being part of their lives for a few years now - I think I can let go just a little now that she's hitched to the love of her life. Taryn and Jeremy balance each other out in a way that both of them need, and in a way that makes both of them better. In fact - I would say Jeremy even helps balance out our wild, crazy family dynamic…he is somewhat calm by comparison, and comes with a compassion, and unbiased, grounded view that we sometimes lack!

Jeremy - I speak on behalf of our entire family when I say “Welcome to our Family!! You’re now a Young-BLUNT!” WHOOT! And Taryn...I'm so freaking EXCITED for you, thank you for the inviting us to capture your spectacular tropic nuptials!

As they say in Costa Rica...

PURA VIDA!

There wasn't much Taryn's bestie, Sarah, wouldn't do for her...including crafting the perfect SPLASH!! The best part...we didn't know we were taking this image until we saw the back of the camera! Then we asked her do jump again!

5 Questions To Ask Your Potential Wedding Photographer... https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/2/top-5-questions-to-ask-your-wedding-photographer

5 Questions To Ask Your Potential Wedding Photographer...

Planning a wedding can be a lot of work! There are so many options to choose from when it comes to photography, venue, decor etc. As photographers, we know a thing or two about choosing the perfect photography match to capture your wedding day memories. Although working within your budget is important, even more important is working with someone whose work you love and has some of these professional qualities that we get into below! In the quest to find the perfect photography fit for your day, here are 5 Important Questions to ask your photographer!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

1. What Is Your STYLE Of Wedding Photography? (and make sure you like it!)

The most important question to ask yourself before you book your photographer, is What Is Your STYLE. There are many different looks out there. From Vintage/Rustic to Bright/Colourful, from Natural Light to Flash, Posed to more photojournalistic! It can be overwhelming! Don't be shy in deciding you like a certain style & look, just go for what you love! If you book a photographer based on budget, but they don't work within the "style" you like...chances are you won't be happy with your photos, and they won't be happy with not being able to deliver what you're looking for in the finished product.

It is important to to see a variety photos inside, outside, on a bright day, and overcast. see if their style is consistent and that you like it. A blog, or instagram account are great places to see their recent work! If the photos are not to your liking, don't book them. Photographers are just not going to  change their style. If their recent work is not up to par, keep going! You can often see full day weddings on blogs.

Here is a look at our blog, which will give you a sense of how we do a day, as well as our portfolio with some of our favourite work:

[JULIEN PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG]

[JULIEN PHOTOGRAPHY WEDDING PORTFOLIO]

Consistency is key when you're looking for the right fit. This will give you great confidence in your photographers abilities, and build trust which is the most important thing!

2. Do You Have Back-Up, Back-Up, Back-Up!?

We've heard stories from couples whose wedding photos were lost...just days after the wedding. And they never saw them, and couldn't get back the day. Again, that is often a hallmark of new photographers, or lower budget photographers. It's heartbreaking, and it happens when a photographer doesn't have the back-up system in place.

Redundancy is paramount, your wedding day is of the utmost importance. That means your photographer should have your images backed up in a minimum 2 different places. "Does your photographer have multiple back-up systems in place?"  As an example, our cameras have dual memory card slots for double back-up on the day of shooting, we then store the digital files on our computer hard drive, an additional external hard drive, the cloud and the final step to back-up is placing the SD memory cards into a fire safe. Sounds like a lot...and it is, but loosing your photos is not happening!

"Does your photographer have a back-up camera in place?" You never know what will go wrong with technology on a day...it can seem as unpredictable as the weather! Does your photographer have a back-up camera in the event that something fails? Sometimes things go wrong, even with weather sealed equipment! So, does your photographer have a back-up camera ready to roll or insurance? Your wedding day doesn't stop because a camera breaks down. Even if your photographer has a second shooter's camera on hand in the event their camera glitches, its great! We know a lot of couples book us because they are getting the two professional photographers = INSTANT BACKUP!!

4. Can You Shoot in Bright, Hot Sunlight or Very Dark Locations & How Do You Handle It?

Often times we are working during the brightest time of the day, in some of the harshest conditions! And later on in the day, we might be inside in a darker, more low light setting. It's incredibly important that your photographer have training in off camera flash for at least the reception. It's always nice to find shade to shoot in outside - but sometimes it's just not there. Trusting your photographer to be able to capture your images regardless of mother natures lighting is so important! That means external flash system lights to fill in the harsh shadows that the sun creates, or to help capture the beautiful blue of the sky and clouds while allowing you to be just as bright! While we don't always need or use flash, we are well versed in it to create gorgeous scenes no matter the light! Once they head inside for reception, they'll need to be able to photograph the various elements of decor, speeches, candids, first dances to cake cut in practically complete darkness. Without training or use of an off camera flash and the Islands notoriously bad light at all reception venues your photos are going to be lower quality and grainy. Simply said without lights, you will likely get back blurry, out of focus images and / or grainy images that look like they've been photographed with nothing more than a disposable camera - and no one wants those images. You are hoping your photographer will say they set up lights, flashes or strobes around the reception or at least have training in some professional flash work or articulate some solution for working in darkness!

5. Rain Plan Anyone?

Wherever you live, rain plans are non-negotiable! We've said it already, but here on Vancouver Island, the weather can be especially unpredictable! Photos can't stop because of a little rain or a torrential downpour! But it's best if your hair remains mostly dry. In a "drought" summer, four weddings we photographed - poured rain. Thank goodness for weather sealed equipment. "If it's raining, does your photographer have umbrellas for cover, and perhaps a location to bring you that won't get you both soaked?" It's always a great idea to work with your photographer and brainstorm couple ideas prior to your wedding in the event of rain. Ask to see some examples of photos they have taken in the rain and see if you like their rain photography skills! Also you may ask is your equipment weather sealed? Only the higher end camera models and lenses are weather sealed and typically makes for a good sign that they are prepared!

5. Does Your Photographer Have Business Insurance and a Business Licence?

You don't want to stress over your photography on your wedding day. You want to know all business aspects have been taken care of on the photographers end so you can enjoy your day. Being an "Insured Photographer" means that if our cameras break down, or get soaked we can have all new equipment the SAME day, with our full PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada) insurance. If your photographer lost 10-20k of equipment in a break in or fire the day before your wedding - what solution would they have to photograph wedding? With an insured photographer you are protected! Insurance offers security.

Being listed & recognized as a reputable business in your own city, who wouldn't want that? Check to see if your photographer even has a business license in their city here's a link to the city of Nanaimo's list

Pipers Lagoon Engagement {Matt & Sara} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/1/pipers-lagoon-engagement-matt-sara Pipers Lagoon Engagement {Matt & Sara}

Sara & Matt's engagement had EVERYTHING AMAZING! Fall colours & changing leaves, beach fire, blue skies plus TURKEY DINNER at the end! We met up with these two in the afternoon on Thanksgiving for their engagement session, and it was the best addition to our weekend! Pipers Lagoon is one of the best places in town - its has a great blend of trees, beach and adventure, especially for those willing to venture over onto the other side with the Garry Oak grove and wide open ocean views!

Sara & I (Courtney) have known each other since we were in high school, we used to compete in singing competitions together, act & sing in musicals and then we met up again a many years later through a great fitness program (Healthy Role Models). As always - it was bucket filling for me especially to photograph a longtime friend, and her love! Just looking at their images, and seeing how happy they are makes me smile!!

We spent a perfect Thanksgiving day celebrating Sara & Matt's engagement - and can't wait for their big day!

I JUST GOT ENGAGED!! Top 10 To-Do's When There is a Ring On It! https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/1/i-just-got-engaged-now-what I JUST GOT ENGAGED!!

Top 10 To-Do's When There is a Ring On It!

First things first - CONGRATULATIONS!! To say it is an exciting time is quite an understatement...because it is a MASSIVELY exciting time! You just got engaged, just retelling the story of how it happened is enough to send you into a romantic spiral! But so are the questions from everyone about the date, the dress, location, favours, bridal party and the list goes on.

We want to help - planning such an epic day, is sometimes overwhelming when you sit down and start to think of all the details! We've been photographers in the wedding industry for just over 10 years now, so we came up with a few ideas and places to start when it comes to your big day!

Now - this isn't a complete list of the many things you'll need to do in the planning process, but these are our Top 10 places to start, so read on!

Here are our suggested...

Top 10 To-Do's When There is a Ring On It!

  1. Choose Your Wedding Date
  2. Book & Choose the Venue
  3. Secure Your Dream Photographer
  4. Book Your JP, Celebrant, Pastor etc.
  5. Book Hair & Make-Up
  6. Find/Order THE Dress
  7. Think About Booking an Engagement Session
  8. Taste the cake, Book the Baker!
  9. Guest List & Invitations
  10. ENJOY YOUR ENGAGEMENT

1. Choose Your Wedding Date

Fair warning - when you get engaged...this will be the first question everyone asks you (even if you've only been engaged for 5 minutes!!). However, choosing your wedding date does take a little time! This can be a tough one, as you may have to compromise on something to get the date you want, or may have to adjust the day you were hoping for to accommodate the photographer or venue you were wanting! From June - August, there are only 12/13 Saturday dates to choose from, but those open up more if you consider booking your date from September through to May, even choosing a non-Saturday date or Friday or Sunday on the long weekend! There are tons of options to consider, and choosing a date outside the summer season, or not a Saturday will open up some amazing bonuses for you! You can read up on the PERKS OF WINTER WEDDINGS here.

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

2. Book Your Venue

We always like to suggest to our couples that they choose somewhere meaningful to themYou have so many venues to choose from here on Vancouver Island! We've got everything from rustic farm, elegant nature to castles, views of the Georgia Strait or rows of vines - the sky is the limit! Venues do tend to go faster, as they are typically only able to celebrate with one amazing couple a day - so choose a few places that spark your fancy, meet with the event planner, take the tour, check the menu & pricing - then make your decision!

3. Find Your Dream Photographer

There are a few out there, and of course we'd love for you to consider us first! That being said, if you've had your eye on someone specific for a while, you love their style, the feeling you get when you look at their images and you have always wanted them to capture your day - we highly recommend starting there, and letting the rest follow! Get in touch with them, let them know when-ish you were thinking of planning your day for, and see what their availability is like! We usually receive 2-4 inquires for Summer Saturdays, and know that we can't be a part of everyones wedding, so just in case we're booked for your day, here is a great link to a blog on 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

4. Book Your Wedding Commissioner/Justice of the Peace, Pastor, Celebrant...

You would be utterly shocked at how quickly these professionals book up! With Commissioners & JP's - they do have other weddings to officiate in a day, and as such can only do so many! Keep this one near the top for your day! Depending on the style of the ceremony you're looking for, you'll want to research the right fit for your day! A Justice of the Peace can give you a traditional ceremony, while a Celebrant will customize and tailor the ceremony to your needs! All the options are fantastic, so choose the best for you! Here is a great website to start your search for a WEDDING COMMISSIONER on Vancouver Island.

5. Hair & Make-Up

You want your hair & make-up to be amazing for you and your ladies - so check in with your favourite stylists once you've booked your day! We always love mobile experts that come to you - so check with yours to see if they can travel! One of our favourite tips (and likely one you'll hear from your stylist!) is to book a consult to see how your perfect wedding day style will look! A consult is the perfect place to try your look, and then discuss with your stylist what you love or don't love about it! Remember - if you aren't a fan, its is okay to be honest with your hair or make-up professional, if you love it, don't be shy to share that either! If you're curious to know how it might photograph, you can alway book your stylist team for your engagement session, or even a sexy boudoir session (you can see more about those HERE!)

6. The Dress Search

You probably spent the better part of a week after your engagement engrossed in wedding dresses...dreaming of what you might wear, seeing what Pinterest had to offer, or TLC's "Say YES to the dress"! There are some boutiques that require appointments, and some that do walk-ins, just call ahead to book your appointment so you can find THE DRESS! Typically, wedding gowns are made to order, and the process can take anywhere fro 6-8 months, so be sure to allow yourself enough time for its arrival, as well as any potential alterations it may need. Here is an amazing article to help you find the best dress for your silhouette!

7. Consider Booking an Engagement Session

If you haven't spent too much time in front of the camera, or you're wanting some gorgeous photos of you & your fiancé - an engagement session is the perfect way to get more comfortable in front of the lens or to celebrate! With our engagements, we love to craft a session with something that you love in mind! Be it sharing a pint at your favourite pub, wandering the beach, bungee jumping or cozying up in your favourite sweater - we want to photograph it all! Engagement sessions are such an amazing opportunity to get to know your photographer, how they work and a little of what to expect on your wedding day!

8. Cake, Cupcakes & Sweet Treats

If the idea of cutting the cake is an important tradition for you, or you want to share your favourite cupcake flavours with family & friends - then you'll want to contact a few places to book cake tastings, as well as see who is available to craft your amazing tower of cake, cupcakes or even favours for the wedding day!

9. Guest List, Save to Dates & Invitations

Now that you've got the date & venue (and likely a few other things!) - its time to curate your guest list, and put together your "Save the Dates" (if you're doing them!) or Invitations to send out to your guests! Once you've got the guests counted, you can put together your seating chart!

10. Enjoy Your Engagement

Alright - if you've checked off most or all of those items above, then its time to sit back, relax and just enjoy being engaged for a while! Take date nights, cuddle your cats...or dogs, enjoy your morning coffee and bask in your engagement bliss!

Wedding Tips For Grooms https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/1/wedding-tips-for-grooms Wedding Tips for the Groom

There are so many blogs that have amazing tips for Bride's to Be, after all, it's a day most brides dream about for years! However; there is not too much out there for Groom's to Be! So - if you're that groom, let's lift a glass and cheers to you! Here's a blog with a few tips from practical to emotional for you to have an amazing wedding day!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Try on Your Wedding Day Suit/Outfit ASAP!

We know the time heading up to the wedding is full of errands and a huge to do list but when your suit arrives -

TRY IT ON ASAP!

Especially if it is a rental. You won't know if its the right fit, or it if needs alterations, and if it does - the tailor will need time to make it happen!

We have seen everything from missing pocket squares, short vests and way too long pants! So do yourself a favour, and try on the suit as soon as you can!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Second Shirt & 50 Shades of White

Steve has a fresh shirt to change into on a hot summers day...you should too! It is his favourite tip for Grooms on the wedding day! Nothing feels better than putting on a clean shirt - especially before you cuddle up to your beautiful wife for dinner & first dances!

The second half of this tip - shade of white matters! Be sure to get a shirt that matches your wife-to-be's gown! If she's in ivory, be sure to find an ivory shirt to match! Whatever you do - do not get white if she's in ivory, or you'll make her gown look dirty!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Deodorant, Mints & Handkerchief

The three wedding day essentials!

Deodorant: Its a long day, and sometimes you just need a little freshening up! This is a great one to keep in a carry bag!

MintsIf you need fresh breath, bring some mints with you, DON'T BRING CHEWING GUM! There is nothing worse than it showing up in photos!

Handkerchief/Blotting Tissues:  These are so great to blot down your forehead and face with, and help reduce the shine for photos. Since you likely aren't having make-up done for the day...think of this as yours!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Empty Your Pockets (Front, Back, Jacket...)

This is for Grooms & Groomsmen: Don't let your wallet, keys & iPhone take centre stage in a photo or at the alter! We know there aren't a lot of options for you to store your items, but please don't use your pockets as the place! Perhaps bring a reusable bag around on the day for you and your guys to store your items in!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Photo Tips for Grooms

A few practical tips for you to keep in mind while having your photos taken!

1. Chin Forward. It is a typical reaction to pull your chin back when the camera is pointed at you. Instead, lean your chin towards the camera like you're really trying to hear every word we're saying! This creates a nice strong jawline and helps convey interest!

2. Stand Up Tall and Strong. Roll your shoulders back and stand up tall!

3. Confidence! Remember: Today, you're marrying the most beautiful woman in the world! What more do you need?

5 Out of the Box Ideas to Celebrate Your Wedding Day https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2020/1/5-tips-to-make-your-day-stand-out 5 Out of the Box Ideas to Celebrate Your Wedding Day

If you're looking for a few amazing ways to make your big day even better...we've got our top "5 Out of the Box Ideas" for you to to Celebrate your Wedding Day!

1. Walk into Your First Dance

We love this one! Often times we watch your first dance as husband and wife unfold - but not everyone is paying attention (they're eating dessert, talking or playing on their phones instead!) We came up with a way to make sure you are the center of attention for your dance as newlyweds! Dance into your reception and captivate everyone!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

1. Add Time to Your Photography Coverage for Sunset or Night Photos

If you're looking to add something spectacularly unique to your wedding photos, sunset & night photos are amazing! We love stealing our couples away for 20 or so minutes to photograph some truly stunning images! These are unlike any of the other images you'll see in your day, and trust us when we say you'll love printing this HUGE to hang on your wall as art!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

3. Start the Day with a First Look

If you're feeling stressed out, nervous or just excited to see each other - a first look could be for you! We love this option for the day, it allows you to take the day all in at a more relaxed pace! After you've gotten ready for the day (hair, make-up & dressed), we take you to a gorgeous location where you can take each other in - cry, laugh and hug without the pressure of a ceremony pace!

While this might not be for the traditional wedding couple - the advantage is that you could have your photos done before the ceremony and then enjoy more time with your guests - especially if your having a later ceremony! This is a perfect option if you want more family and friends time!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

4. Have an Un-Balanced Wedding Party

Your bridal party doesn't have to be even on both sides! If your party is symmetric, GREAT, if not - no worries! An un-balanced party makes for some fun photo ops. Your bridal party will have a blast knowing its made up of YOUR most treasured friends, and some lucky guy or girl will get to walk the aisle with two amazing people on their arms! BOOM!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

5. Add Video Coverage to Your Day!

Yes...we know wedding video has been around for a long time! But - these new short and fun Wedding Music videos are truly unique! If you're looking for ways to make the story of your wedding day come alive, and really showcase your personalities, just add video to your photography! Your wedding day is full of unexpected things - tears, laughs, drink spills, dirt stains and possibly few other things! So why not be prepared? We've been photographing weddings for sometime now, and we pack a little emergency kit for most unexpected occasions! If you've been attacked by a mosquito orstung by a wasp (that happened to one of our grooms!), got a splash of mud front and centre on your gown...we've got you covered! While we've got most items in our kit for you, sometimes you may want to have an extra few things on hand, so we put together a list of things that may be perfect to go in your wedding day bag for those "Just in case" moments! We even made you a printable PDF that you can get by clicking HERE! Enjoy!

  1. Extra Dress Shirt for the Groom
  2. Comfortable Walking Shoes for the Bride with a Bag to Carry Them In (Flip Flops, Runners etc.)
  3. Extra Dress Socks

Mt. Washington Wedding {Mike & Jennifer} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2019/12/mt-washington-wedding-mike-jennifer Mt. Washington Wedding {Mike & Jennifer}

You never know what you are going to get weather wise in November- and Mike & Jennifer essentially had a summer wedding in November! It was so warm and sunny, the guests didn't even use their cozy jackets for the ceremony! We arrived to the mountain a little early, and thought we'd check out the ceremony site and found a custom arbour! It turns out, Mike is an incredibly skilled craftsman, and made the arbour, and assembled it the morning of the wedding! I'll be putting in my order for a porch swing at some point Mike...

We don't know if it was their magnetic personalities, the huge Costco size bag of bird food, likely a combo of the two - but these two had most of the Whiskey Jacks on the mountain eating from the palm of their hands, which made for some great entertainment...and the odd awesome photo!  The light on their day was warm, cozy and perfect for photos in Strathcona Park! We loved the sunset light at the reception and beyond excited to do some night shots with the Gazebo Mike made! It was an amazing wedding filled with friends and family who really cared about these two and we were honoured to be a part of their day! Congratulations Jenn & Mike!

Our Exclusive Night Wedding Portraits https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2019/11/our-exclusive-night-time-wedding-photos Our Exclusive Night Wedding Portraits

We love NIGHT PORTRAITS! Not only does the night time ambiance add a touch of romance, but also really helps to focus the photo on the couple. We love the challenge of working in a low light to no light environment, and having to create most or all the light you see, they aren't for the faint of technical heart! Our night shots typically require multiple flashes, LED lights, tripods, and often times even iPhones! While you're enjoying the party, we'll often duck out of your reception to get things adjusted and set up.

We've worked with everything from cars to Vegas lights...Here are some of our fave night shots with a little behind the scenes info about the images!

CARS & HARLEYS

Focused with the Focus 2 app

We love incorporating elements into our night photography that are meaningful to the couple and the Vissers love their Volvo's! This first photo required a wireless flash behind the couple pointed upwards to fill the car and wrap around the couple, there was a small led by the dash to illuminate them, and a little pop underneath the car with another flash!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

The family Mustang followed each of the kids around to their weddings - and it was gorgeous! For this shot, we felt it needed to be a little more fashion looking, so we put a flash with a blue gel beneath the car, two lights on stands for some drama and rim light, topped off with one to light Ron & Jackie! This photo still makes us feel like we were shooting a Hollywood movie!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Harleys always look great, and it was Brett's dream to have his bike in photos on the wedding day! We set it up in front of the Beach Club, added 3 lights, showed off their navy wedding Chucks and BOOM! Magic in the making! If you've got a bike...bring it on!

FARMS & ANIMALS

We're suckers for animals...so when we found out there was a sweet little photogenic pig at Birds Eye Cove, we got pretty excited! What better way to celebrate your day then with the perfect piggy! We kept it fairly simple with this two light set up, we used a back light to pop them from the barn, and combined a strobe with the modelling light for the front!

VEGAS BABY

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

It felt like years of night photography led us up to this moment...photos of the Las Vegas strip! Although we'd spent the earlier part of the afternoon taking photos with Kyle and Cecilia around their venue, they were ready to roll the dice on some night photos before packing it in...after all, it is Vegas! We had a pack fairly light around town, so we had two flashes plus our little Lume Cubes!

MOON RIVER

Dragon's Lodge is a stunning private property on Gabriola! The Lodge sits on the edge of a bluff with beautiful ocean views all the way across the Strait! When we saw the low moon shinning on the ocean...we got Vincent and Lisa out to capture the scene! We needed a slower shutter to get the moon across the water, so we used a tripod for the camera, a single flash, and one of us tossed the veil to make it extra romantic!

ARCHITECTURE

We are Cuckoo for Cuckoos! Since taking this photo, they've built a beautiful pergola - so this image is now pretty much impossible to capture! We had to rest a Lume Cube light on the rail to the left of Andy & Kim to illuminate their faces, and we popped a big strobe inside the room behind them to light the background of the scene! We love this quite moment and romantic Italian architecture  above while the party carries on below!

INTERNATIONAL AWARD WINNING

One of our most recognized shots and one of our first major awards! Matt & Tianay had rain for most of the day, and while we were all keen to dry off - we had this idea of a romantic photo in the rain! Near the end of the reception, we went out to get it all set up, and wouldn't you know it...the rain suddenly STOPPED. We had jimmy rigged the light inside the umbrella, and were all ready to go bring M&T out. Cue sudden and unexpected feelings on the rain having stopped. Steve was about to call it a night, but I saw a nearby hose with a shower head on it...if the rain decided it was done, we would shower them with a garden hose! Ultimately...it worked much better than the rain, and we got them just as wet!  This photo earned us our first Silver Award on the International Photography stage!

OUR MOST VIEWED PHOTO!

Focused with the Focus 2 app

Our most viewed photos thanks to the HuffPost! Kim & Richies photo has been in the HuffPosts snowy wedding photo blogs, and has been seen around the world! Its amazing what the snow covers and makes look magical...in this case a parking lot and picnic pavilion! We saw the warm parking lot light, and loved the mix of blue and orange! We kept it uber simple with a single back light and a little light reflection from the snow!

STYLED SHOOT AT THE EMPRESS

This was our first non-wedding, wedding photoshoot! We like to think the Empress chose us to do the night portion of this because we shoot at night so often! It was nothing short of magical to photograph on the private terrace at the hotel!

GAZEBOS

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Focused with the Focus 2 app Julien PhotographyJulien Photography
  Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

We are lucky to have some amazing gazebo's at our VI wedding venue's! Not only does the Gazebo work great for the ceremony...but at night it frames a couple, AND you can hide all your lights in the posts and really create something unique!

WATER AT NIGHT

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

It was the end of a hot day for Brandyn & Erica, what better way to cool off then wading waist deep into the tide? These two had a beautiful lantern for their night shot, and we wanted a little of the ocean reflection in the image! All the light in this photo was created by two strobes, and our "Nice" light!

LIGHTSABERS!

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography

Steve is a big time Star Wars Fan! So when ever we have a couple ready to embrace the Geekside we are there 100%! The light in this image is coming from their ACTUAL Lightsabers, and a single flash! We love this photo because of the team work involved...we had two of the bridal party members run from the outside of the frame in waving the lightsabers and placing them into Rachel-Anne & Alexs hands before running back out of frame! The camera was set up on the tripod with a long shutter, as well as a manual flash! Teamwork makes the Dream-Work!

HOLY SMOKEGRENADES

Julien PhotographyJulien Photography    Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Julien PhotographyJulien Photography Focused with the Focus app

Smoke grenades made for a dramatic new addition to some of our night shots! When the air is still and the backdrop compliments it, smoke adds a really romantic atmosphere to a night scene and we love the results! These smoke bombs last for just a couple minutes - so we warm the couples up, get all the lights ready, rehearse a couple poses and let er rip! Sometimes these shots are pretty good for a laugh as one of us is usually running around like crazy behind the couple to get the smoke to disperse all over!

Those are just some of our favourites! Do you have a fave? Let us know below in the comments section!

Ladysmith Wedding {Mark & Jann} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2019/10/ladysmith-wedding-mark-jann Ladysmith Wedding {Mark & Jann}

Mark & Jann were our first official Autumn wedding of the season and oh boy those rich colours did not disappoint! Its always pretty exciting to catch the leaves falling, and then stop everything to get a photo under the best looking tree on the block! We've been to Transfer Beach a handful of times - and were shocked that we hadn't noticed the most beautiful little fence along the tree line, so of course just before they loaded the party bus with the bridal party - we had to take it all in photo style!

One of our favourite parts of photographing Catholic ceremonies is how they are approached. They are and regarded with awe, reverence and respect - and marriage is celebrated as a Holy Sacrament. Its ceremonies like J&M's that we are reminded of not only of what we're capturing on a day, but of the importance of marriage, especially our own. Its so much more than just a day of celebrating...although that is a big part of it!

We could tell from their group of family & friends (and the tears & laughs shared!), that these two are loved dearly, and it was an honour to be part of their very special day!

Mount Washington Wedding {Taylor & Ashley} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2019/10/mount-washington-wedding-taylor-ashley Mount Washington Wedding {Taylor & Ashley}

We didn't realize that we had found other cat people with Ashley & Taylor...but it turns out they're OUR people! These two and their bridal party were super entertaining to spend the day atop Mt. Washington with...and it wasn't JUST because they're cat obsessed, although that made it all the more spectacular!

These two had a couple few really unique touches to their day. They decided on a first look prior to the ceremony, but it wasn't your standard program! They SURPRISED each other with their wedding bands! Neither had any idea what theirs would look like - so it was pretty neat to see the reactions to their bands! If you haven't heard of a Salt & Pepper diamond - you should look into it! Following their ring surprise, they took up centre aisle and spoke their vows allowed to each other and the mountains!

One of the BEST things of all time from their wedding was the pink smoke grenade they walked through after saying "I do"! They had come back from the official signing, stood behind the arbour, pulled the caps of the grenades and then jumped through the cloud of pink and back down the aisle! It wasn't the first time we'd seen a smoke bomb - it was however the first time we've had a couple bold enough to make their exit that way! It was awesome to say the least.

We could go on and on, but instead, have a look at our favourites from their slope slide nuptials!

Bird's Eye Cove Wedding {Dana & Brett} https://www.julienphotography.ca/blog/2019/10/birds-eye-cove-wedding-dana-brett Bird's Eye Cove Farm Wedding {Dana & Brett}

Easily one of our favourite weddings from this year! This was our first time shooting at Bird's Eye Cove Farm and it was amazing... We felt like kids again getting to explore the farm - pigs, cows, chickens, tractors...it just kept getting more exciting! It's definitely one of the Islands best venues - with its rolling hills, gorgeous reception building, views of Maple Bay and the farm & barn charm - it's a perfect all one place to celebrate your big day!

You could feel the love from everyone at this wedding, the guests, family, bridal party and especially Dana & Brett. There were tears (lots from Brett & his dad...cue heart strings!), smiles and laughs all day and we were so happy to be able to capture all of it! The vendors all brought their "A" game to make this an epic and extremely beautiful to capture! We are in love with the results and can't wait to share it all with you guys, but for now enjoy this preview of Dana & Brett's amazing wedding day!

You know when someone has a late night hot dog snack for guests...you're winning big time! Turns out late night hot dogs are THE BEST hot dogs - THANKS Chris & Bri! We had an amazing day celebrating this baseball playing, dodgeball throwing, dog loving couple! They had a hilarious group of friends and family to celebrate the day with, and it made for an exciting day! They had some unique touches to their day...aside from the late night hot dog bar, the awesome Celebrant, and their phenomenal bridal party...

One of the things we loved best (and would highly recommend!!) came from their first look. Sometimes speaking in front of a group of your most loved people, to YOUR most loved person is beyond hard - you feel anxious, vulnerable and just the thought of it makes you sweat. Chris & Bri wrote letters to each other, and in the privacy of the trees, away from prying eyes - they read them allowed to each other during their first look! If you know what you want to say to your love is going to be emotional, or hard to say in front of a crowd - this is an absolutely perfect way & time to say it!

Nonee & Ross had so many beautiful, creative touches to their wedding day...and it may blow your mind to learn that Ross did many of those fabulous details using a Cricut Maker!! Say WHAT! Its not every day we have a groom that a) knows what a Cricut is and b) is willing to craft and create on one. Ross - we applaud you, salute you and respect the heck out of you! Steve has looked at my Cricut...but that's as far as he's gone with it.

These two had everything from decals on lanterns, table signs, guest favours, wooden signs...you name it - they crafted it! They even got someone back in Edmonton to take photos of their dogs, Molly & Kensi with table numbers! It didn't matter what table you were at, you were looking at a pretty cute little face! And lets not forget the tables Nonee had in the reception...we have been seeing circular for a few years now (no big deal, BUT...) we had our minds blown with the stunning, wooden banquet looking tables she chose...

Beyond all the fabulous details that went into their day...these two were amazing, with a class bridal party to boot! We had such a good time celebrating the day with Nonee & Ross...but you should see for yourself below!
